How the WPM Calculator Works

Typing speed is measured in words per minute, where a “word” is standardised as five characters. Divide the number of words you typed by the time it took in minutes and you have your gross WPM. Subtract your uncorrected errors first and you get net WPM, the figure typing tests actually report.

For reference, the average typist manages around 40 WPM, a proficient one 60–80, and top typists exceed 100. This calculator also estimates characters per minute (WPM × 5), a common alternative measure.

WPM = words ÷ minutes  ·  net WPM = (words − errors) ÷ minutes

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good typing speed?

Average is about 40 words per minute. 60–80 WPM is fast and typical of professionals who type all day; over 100 WPM is elite.

What is the difference between gross and net WPM?

Gross WPM counts everything you typed; net WPM subtracts uncorrected errors first, so it rewards accuracy. Typing tests report net WPM.

Why is a word five characters?

It is the long-standing standard for typing tests, so speeds are comparable regardless of the actual words. WPM × 5 gives characters per minute.
