Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) gauges how well your kidneys filter, based on your serum creatinine, age and sex. This uses the 2021 CKD-EPI creatinine equation, the current race-free standard. A result of 90 or above is normal; the number falls as filtration declines. A 50-year-old man with a creatinine of 1.0 mg/dL has an eGFR around 92.
eGFR is reported per 1.73 m² of body surface area and defines the CKD stages G1 through G5. It’s an estimate — muscle mass, diet and lab methods affect creatinine — so clinicians interpret it alongside other tests. This tool is for education, not diagnosis.
eGFR = 142 × min(Scr/κ,1)α × max(Scr/κ,1)−1.2 × 0.9938age (×1.012 if female)
90 or above with no other signs of kidney damage is considered normal. 60–89 is mildly reduced; below 60 for three months or more suggests chronic kidney disease.
The 2021 CKD-EPI creatinine equation, which removed the race coefficient. It needs only creatinine, age and sex.
No — it’s an estimate from creatinine, which varies with muscle mass and diet. Doctors read it together with urine tests and history.
