The ponderal index is like BMI but divides weight by height cubed instead of squared, which makes it more consistent across very tall and very short people, where BMI can mislead. It’s weight in kilograms divided by height in metres cubed, with a normal range of roughly 11–14 kg/m³.
It’s used in pediatrics (as a newborn health measure) and for athletes and people at the extremes of height, where BMI is a poorer guide.
ponderal index = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)³
A body-size measure like BMI but using height cubed, giving a more height-independent figure. Normal is about 11–14 kg/m³.
BMI divides by height squared; the ponderal index divides by height cubed, which works better for very tall or short people.
In pediatrics for newborns, and for very tall or short adults where BMI is less reliable.
