The number of steps in a mile depends on your stride length, which scales with height. A common estimate puts stride at about 0.413 times your height in inches for walking, and 0.415 for running. Divide the 63,360 inches in a mile by your stride to get steps: a 70-inch person takes roughly 2,190 walking steps per mile.
It’s an estimate — actual stride varies with speed, fitness and terrain — but it’s useful for setting step goals or checking a pedometer.
steps per mile = 63,360 ÷ (height × stride factor)
Roughly 2,000–2,500 depending on height and stride. A 70-inch person walks about 2,190 steps per mile.
Slightly — running stride is a touch longer, so it takes marginally fewer steps per mile.
About 0.413 times your height in inches for walking; taller people cover more ground per step.
