Body mass index compares your weight to your height with a single number: weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared (in US units, 703 times pounds over inches squared). It sorts into ranges — under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 normal, 25 to 29.9 overweight, and 30 or more obese — and this calculator also shows the healthy weight range for your height.
BMI is a quick population-level screen, not a diagnosis. It doesn’t distinguish muscle from fat, so very muscular people can read high, and it doesn’t capture where fat is carried. Use it as one signal alongside waist measurement and a professional’s advice.
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²
Note: an estimate using standard formulas and population averages. It isn’t medical advice — talk to a healthcare professional about your health.
Divide weight in kilograms by height in metres squared. In US units, multiply pounds by 703 and divide by height in inches squared.
18.5 to 24.9 is the normal range. Below is underweight; 25–29.9 is overweight; 30 and above is obese.
It’s a general screen, not a diagnosis. Athletes with high muscle mass can read as overweight, and it ignores fat distribution, so pair it with other measures.
