To find how much gravel you need, multiply the length and width of the area by the depth to get a volume, then convert to cubic yards — the unit gravel is usually sold in. Because depth is entered in inches, the calculator divides it by twelve to get feet before multiplying.
Gravel weighs roughly 1.4 tons per cubic yard, though it varies by stone type and moisture, so the tonnage is an estimate. Order about ten percent extra to account for settling and uneven ground.
cubic yards = length (ft) × width (ft) × (depth in ÷ 12) ÷ 27
Gravel weighs roughly 1.4 tons per cubic yard, though it varies with stone size and moisture. This calculator uses 1.4 as an estimate.
For a driveway, 4 to 6 inches over a base is common; for a walkway or decorative bed, 2 to 3 inches is typical. Enter your depth in inches.
