How the Grade Calculator Works

A grade on a single test or assignment is just the points you earned divided by the points that were possible, expressed as a percentage. Enter both numbers and the calculator returns the percentage and the matching letter grade. It works the same whether the score is out of 50, 100 or any other total.

For a quiz marked by questions, enter the number you got right as the points earned and the total number of questions as the points possible. The letter grade uses a standard scale; your school’s cut-offs may differ slightly.

grade % = points earned ÷ points possible × 100

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my grade as a percentage?

Divide the points you earned by the points possible and multiply by 100. Scoring 42 out of 50 is 42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84%.

How does a percentage convert to a letter grade?

This tool uses a common scale where 90 and above is an A range, 80s a B, 70s a C, 60s a D and below 60 an F, with plus and minus bands. Individual schools sometimes set different thresholds.

Can I use this to grade a quiz by number correct?

Yes. Enter the number of questions you answered correctly as the points earned and the total number of questions as the points possible.
