Percentage difference measures how far apart two values are relative to their average, without treating either one as the “starting” value. You take the absolute gap between them, divide by their average, and multiply by 100. Because it uses the average, swapping the two values gives the same answer.
That makes it different from percentage change, which does have a direction: it measures the move from a specific starting value to an ending value, dividing by the start. This calculator shows both, so you can pick the right one — difference for comparing two independent measurements, change for growth or decline over time.

Percentage change has a direction — it measures the move from a starting value to a new one and divides by the start. Percentage difference compares two values symmetrically by dividing their gap by their average, so order does not matter.
Use it when neither value is a natural baseline — for example comparing two lab measurements or two prices where you just want the relative gap, not growth from one to the other.
