How the Reciprocal Calculator Works

The reciprocal of a number is 1 divided by that number — the value you multiply it by to get 1. The reciprocal of 4 is 0.25 (1/4), and the reciprocal of a fraction just flips it: the reciprocal of 2/3 is 3/2. Zero has no reciprocal, since you can’t divide by zero.

Reciprocals turn division into multiplication: dividing by a number is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal, which is how fraction division works.

reciprocal of x = 1 ÷ x
