After-tax (net) income is what’s left after tax: gross income times one minus your tax rate. At a 22% effective rate, $75,000 gross leaves $58,500. Use your effective rate (total tax ÷ income) rather than your top bracket for an accurate figure, and remember payroll taxes and state tax may apply on top of federal.
It’s the number that actually matters for budgeting — what lands in your account — and the basis for comparing job offers or locations with different taxes.
after-tax income = gross × (1 − tax rate)
Multiply gross income by (1 minus your tax rate). At 22%, $75,000 becomes $58,500.
Your effective rate (total tax ÷ income) gives the truest net figure, not your top marginal bracket.
Only if you fold it into the rate. Combine federal, state and payroll rates for full take-home pay.
