How the Treadmill Pace Calculator Works

Treadmills show speed in miles (or kilometres) per hour, but runners think in pace — minutes per mile. To convert, divide 3,600 seconds by the mph to get seconds per mile: 6.0 mph is a 10:00 mile. This calculator gives pace per mile and per kilometre, the km/h speed, and your projected 5K time at that setting.

One note: running outdoors is slightly harder than a flat treadmill because of air resistance and terrain. Many runners set a 1% incline to better match outdoor effort at a given pace.

pace per mile = 3600 ÷ speed in mph

Frequently Asked Questions

What pace is 6 mph on a treadmill?

A 10:00 minute-per-mile pace. Divide 3,600 by the mph to get seconds per mile.

How do I convert treadmill mph to pace?

Divide 3,600 by the speed in mph for seconds per mile, then read it as minutes and seconds. 7.5 mph is 8:00 per mile.

Should I set an incline?

A 1% incline roughly offsets the lack of wind resistance indoors, making treadmill effort closer to running the same pace outside.
