A dog’s daily calories start from its resting energy requirement (RER) — 70 times its weight in kilograms to the power 0.75 — multiplied by an activity factor. An active 50-lb adult needs roughly 1,160 calories a day, or about 3.6 cups of a typical 325-calorie-per-cup kibble.
Puppies, working dogs and pregnant dogs need more; seniors and neutered dogs need less. Check the calories printed on your food bag, since they vary widely, and adjust to keep your dog at a healthy weight.
daily calories = 70 × (kg)^0.75 × activity factor
Base it on daily calories: about 70 × (weight in kg)^0.75 × an activity factor. A 50-lb active dog needs roughly 1,160 calories.
Divide the calories by the calories-per-cup on your food bag (often around 325). 1,160 calories is about 3.6 cups.
Yes — puppies need roughly twice the resting requirement to fuel growth.
