“Ideal body weight” is an estimate used in medicine and fitness, based mostly on height and sex. This calculator shows four classic formulas — Devine, Hamwi, Robinson and Miller — which all start from a base weight at five feet tall and add a set amount per inch above that. It also gives the healthy weight range from the BMI scale (18.5–24.9).
These formulas don’t account for build, muscle or frame size, so they’re a reference point rather than a target. The BMI range is often the more useful guide for a healthy weight.
Devine: men 50 kg + 2.3 kg/in over 5 ft · women 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg/in
A height-and-sex based estimate of a healthy weight, originally developed for medication dosing. Several formulas exist; this shows the main four plus the BMI range.
They give similar numbers. Devine is the most widely used clinically, but the healthy BMI range is often a better everyday guide.
No. These formulas use only height and sex, so very muscular or large-framed people may sit above the “ideal” and still be healthy.
