Great coffee comes down to the ratio of coffee to water. A common starting point is 1:16 — one gram of coffee for every sixteen grams (millilitres) of water — which the Specialty Coffee Association calls the golden ratio. This calculator takes your water amount and ratio and tells you exactly how much coffee to grind.
A lower number (1:15) makes a stronger brew, a higher one (1:17–18) a lighter cup. Weighing coffee is far more consistent than scooping, since bean density varies.
coffee (g) = water (g) ÷ ratio
1:16 is the classic golden ratio — 1 g of coffee per 16 g of water. Use 1:15 for stronger, 1:17 for lighter.
At 1:16, about 31 grams — roughly six tablespoons of ground coffee.
Bean size and grind change how much a scoop holds; weighing gives the same strength every time.
