How the Growing Degree Days Calculator Works

Growing degree days (GDD) measure accumulated heat to predict how crops and pests develop. For one day, average the high and low temperature and subtract a base temperature below which the plant doesn’t grow (often 50°F). A day with a high of 80 and low of 60 gives an average of 70, so 20 GDD above a 50°F base. Negative results count as zero.

Farmers and gardeners add GDD across the season to time planting, spraying and harvest — a crop might need a set number of accumulated GDD to reach maturity.
