How the Car Affordability Calculator Works

This works a car payment backward. Starting from the monthly payment you’re comfortable with, it finds the loan that payment can support at your rate and term, then adds your down payment to get the car price you can afford. A $400 payment with $2,000 down at 7% over 60 months supports roughly a $22,200 car.

It covers the loan itself — remember to leave room for insurance, fuel, registration and maintenance, which add to the true cost of ownership. A common guideline is to keep total car costs under about 15–20% of take-home pay.

price = down payment + loan supported by the payment

Frequently Asked Questions

How much car can I afford?

Work backward from a comfortable monthly payment: this finds the loan that payment supports at your rate and term, then adds your down payment.

What percent of income should a car payment be?

A common rule is to keep the payment under about 10–15% of take-home pay, and all car costs under 20%.

Does this include insurance and gas?

No — it’s the purchase price the loan supports. Budget separately for insurance, fuel, registration and maintenance.
