The calculator adds up the wall area — twice the room’s length plus width, times the height — plus the ceiling if you are boarding it, adds ten percent for waste and offcuts, then divides by the area of one sheet. It rounds up, because you cannot buy part of a sheet.
A 4×8 sheet covers 32 square feet and is the easiest to handle solo; 4×12 sheets cover 48 square feet and leave fewer seams to tape but are heavy and awkward in tight spaces.

Add the wall area (twice length plus width, times height) and the ceiling if included, add about 10 percent waste, and divide by 32 for 4×8 sheets or 48 for 4×12. A 12×10 room with 9-foot walls and a ceiling needs about 16 sheets of 4×8.
4×8 sheets are lighter and easier to carry and hang alone. 4×12 sheets cover more and create fewer seams to finish, which speeds up taping, but they are heavy and hard to manoeuvre in small rooms.
No, just the sheets. As a rough guide, plan on about one pound of screws and a gallon of joint compound per two to three sheets, plus drywall tape for the seams.
