How the Grass Seed Calculator Works
Seed is sold and applied by a rate per 1,000 square feet. Multiply your lawn area by that rate and divide by 1,000 to get the pounds you need. A 5,000-square-foot lawn seeded at 5 pounds per 1,000 square feet needs 25 pounds of seed.
Rates vary by grass and by job: a brand-new lawn is seeded about twice as heavily as overseeding an existing one, and fine fescues go down heavier than ryegrass or Kentucky bluegrass. Check the bag — it lists the new-lawn and overseeding rates. Add about 5–10% extra for edges and thin spots.

What is a typical seeding rate?
It depends on the grass. As a rough guide, new lawns run about 4–8 lb per 1,000 sq ft and overseeding about half that; the seed bag gives exact figures.
Should I buy extra seed?
Adding 5–10% covers edges, thin patches and uneven spreading, so you don’t come up short partway through.
