A megapixel is one million pixels. Multiply an image’s width by its height in pixels and divide by a million: a 4000×3000 photo is 12 megapixels. That count sets how much detail the image holds and how large it can be printed or cropped.
More megapixels isn’t everything — lens quality, sensor size and light matter too — but it does determine maximum print size and cropping room.

Multiply the pixel width by the pixel height and divide by one million. 4000 × 3000 = 12 MP.
12 MP prints beautifully at typical sizes; 24 MP+ gives more room to crop or print large.
