An aspect ratio is the proportion of width to height, written in lowest terms — so 1920×1080 is 16:9. This calculator divides both dimensions by their greatest common divisor to simplify the ratio, names the common format if it recognises one, and gives the decimal ratio (width ÷ height).
Aspect ratio matters whenever you resize or crop: keeping the same ratio avoids stretching. 16:9 is standard for video and monitors, 4:3 for older screens, and 1:1 for square social posts.
ratio = width : height, divided by their greatest common divisor
16:9 — the standard widescreen HD ratio. Both numbers divide by 120 to give 16 and 9.
Scale width and height by the same factor. To find a new height for a target width, multiply the width by height÷width of the original.
16:9 (HD video and monitors), 4:3 (older screens), 21:9 (ultrawide), 1:1 (square) and 9:16 (vertical video).
