Ground speed is how fast you’re actually moving over the ground, found by dividing distance flown by the time it took. Cover 150 nautical miles in 45 minutes and your ground speed is 200 knots. This calculator takes distance in nautical miles and time in minutes and returns ground speed in knots and mph.
It’s the quick way to check progress in flight or to work back from a timed leg. Ground speed differs from airspeed because of wind — a headwind slows you over the ground, a tailwind speeds you up.
ground speed = distance ÷ time
Divide the distance covered by the time taken. 150 nm in 45 minutes (0.75 hr) is 200 knots.
Airspeed is your speed through the air; ground speed is your speed over the ground. Wind is the difference between them.
Note the distance between two points and the minutes to fly it, then divide — that’s your ground speed.
