Spacing keeps plants from crowding as they mature. Convert the recommended spacing to feet (divide inches by 12), then count how many fit along the bed’s length and width. Multiply the two to get the total in a simple square grid. A 10-by-4-foot bed with 12-inch spacing holds 10 across and 4 down — 40 plants.
A square grid is the easy layout. A triangular (offset) layout fits about 15% more plants in the same area because each row nestles into the gaps of the one before it. Always follow the spacing on the seed packet or plant tag — it accounts for the mature size.
plants = floor(length ÷ spacing) × floor(width ÷ spacing)
Convert the spacing to feet, then multiply how many fit along the length by how many fit along the width. This calculator does it for a square grid.
