Kinetic energy is the energy of motion. It equals one-half the mass times the velocity squared, so it grows with the square of speed — double the speed and you quadruple the energy. A 10-kilogram object moving at 5 m/s carries 125 joules of kinetic energy.
Mass is in kilograms and velocity in meters per second, giving energy in joules. Because velocity is squared, speed matters far more than mass — which is why a small increase in speed makes a big difference in impact energy.
KE = ½ × mass × velocity²
Multiply one-half the mass (kg) by the velocity (m/s) squared. The result is in joules.
Kinetic energy comes from the work done to accelerate an object, which scales with the square of speed. Doubling speed quadruples the energy.
