How the Corrected Sodium Calculator Works

High blood glucose pulls water into the bloodstream, diluting sodium and making the measured value look falsely low. The corrected sodium estimates what the level would be at a normal glucose. The traditional Katz factor adds 1.6 mEq/L of sodium for every 100 mg/dL that glucose sits above 100. With a measured sodium of 130 and glucose of 400, the corrected sodium is about 134.8.

This correction matters in diabetic emergencies like DKA and HHS, where treating the glucose will shift the sodium. Some clinicians prefer the Hillier factor of 2.4 in very high glucose ranges. This is an educational estimate, not a treatment tool.
