How the Gematria Calculator Works

Gematria assigns a number to each letter and adds them up for a word or phrase. This calculator shows the four methods people use most. Simple (also called ordinal) is the intuitive one — A=1, B=2, on to Z=26. English gematria multiplies the simple value by six, a convention popular on gematria sites. Pythagorean (full reduction) reduces each letter to a single digit 1–9. Reverse ordinal counts backward, A=26 down to Z=1.

Gematria began as a Hebrew and Greek practice of reading numeric meaning into scripture, and today it’s used in numerology, puzzles and word games. The number itself carries no proven significance — it’s a bit of letter-arithmetic to play with.
