Percent error measures how close an experimental or measured value is to the true, accepted value — a staple of physics and chemistry labs. Take the absolute difference between your measured value and the actual value, divide by the actual value, and multiply by 100. The absolute value keeps the result positive, since percent error describes size of the miss, not direction.
A small percent error means an accurate measurement. What counts as “good” depends on the experiment, but lab work often aims for a few percent or less.
percent error = |measured − actual| ÷ |actual| × 100
Subtract the actual value from the measured value, take the absolute value, divide by the actual value, and multiply by 100. Measuring 9.8 against an actual 9.81 gives |9.8 − 9.81| ÷ 9.81 × 100 ≈ 0.10%.
Because it uses the absolute value of the difference. Percent error reports how far off a measurement is, not whether it was too high or too low.
It depends on the experiment, but a smaller percent error means a more accurate result. Many introductory labs consider a few percent acceptable.
