How the Paycheck Calculator Works

Your gross salary is not your take-home pay. Before the money reaches your bank account it is reduced by federal income tax, by FICA — Social Security at 6.2%% up to the 2026 wage base of $184,600, plus Medicare at 1.45%% on all wages — and, in most states, by a state income tax. This calculator estimates each slice and shows what is left.

Pick your state, enter your annual gross salary, choose your filing status and how often you are paid, and the desk returns your net pay per paycheck plus a full annual breakdown. Add pre-tax deductions (a 401(k), HSA or health premiums) to lower the income-taxable amount. Nine states levy no income tax at all; the rest range from low flat rates to graduated brackets above 13%%.

take-home = gross − federal income tax − Social Security − Medicare − state income tax − pre-tax deductions

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this paycheck calculator?

It applies the 2026 federal tax brackets, the $184,600 Social Security wage base, the 1.45% Medicare rate, and each state’s 2026 income tax rules to your salary. It is a solid planning estimate, but it does not model local city or county taxes, tax credits, itemized deductions, or every payroll nuance, so your real paycheck may differ by a little.

Which states have no income tax?

Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming levy no state income tax. New Hampshire taxes certain interest and dividend income but not wages, so wage paychecks there are not reduced by a state income tax either.

What is FICA and how much is it?

FICA is the payroll tax for Social Security and Medicare. Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to $184,600 in 2026; Medicare is 1.45% of all wages, with an extra 0.9% on wages above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly). Your employer pays a matching share.

Does a 401(k) change my take-home pay?

Yes. Traditional 401(k) and HSA contributions are taken out before federal and state income tax, lowering the tax on your paycheck, though 401(k) contributions are still subject to Social Security and Medicare. Enter them in the pre-tax deductions field.
