How the Food Cost Calculator Works

Food cost per serving is the total cost of a recipe’s ingredients divided by the number of servings it makes. If you also enter a menu price, the calculator gives the food-cost percentage — the ingredient cost as a share of the price — which restaurants typically aim to keep between about 28% and 35%.

A lower food-cost percentage means more gross margin, but price has to stay competitive. Use it to price dishes, compare recipes and spot where ingredients are eating your profit.

food cost % = cost per serving ÷ menu price × 100

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate food cost?

Divide the total ingredient cost by the number of servings for the cost per serving, then divide that by the menu price for the food-cost percentage.

What is a good food cost percentage?

Most restaurants target 28–35%. Lower leaves more margin; higher squeezes profit.

What does food cost percentage tell me?

How much of each dollar of a dish’s price goes to ingredients — the rest covers labour, overhead and profit.
