Download time is the file size divided by your connection speed — but you have to match the units. File sizes are in bytes (MB, GB), while internet speeds are usually in bits (Mbps, megabits per second), and there are 8 bits in a byte. This calculator converts the file to bits and the speed to bits per second, then divides, so a 100 MB file on a 50 Mbps connection takes about 16 seconds.
Real-world downloads run a bit slower than the theoretical figure because of overhead, congestion and server limits, so treat the result as a best case.
time = file size × 8 ÷ speed (in matching bit units)
Divide the file size by your speed, matching units. Remember 8 bits per byte: a 100 MB file at 50 Mbps takes about 16 seconds.
Speeds are advertised in megabits and best-case. Overhead, Wi-Fi, congestion and the server all reduce real throughput.
Mbps is megabits per second; MB/s is megabytes per second, 8 times larger. A 50 Mbps connection is about 6.25 MB/s.
