Churn rate is the percentage of customers (or subscribers) you lose over a period: customers lost divided by customers at the start, times 100. Lose 25 of 500 customers in a month and your monthly churn is 5%. Retention rate is simply the rest — 95%.
Churn compounds fast: 5% monthly churn means losing nearly half your customers over a year if none are replaced. It’s one of the most important health metrics for any subscription business.
churn rate = customers lost ÷ customers at start × 100
Divide the customers lost in a period by the number you started with, then multiply by 100.
Lower is better. Many SaaS businesses aim for under 5–7% annually for larger customers; monthly consumer churn is often higher.
The opposite of churn — the share of customers you keep. Retention + churn = 100%.
