How the Tip Calculator Works
Tipping is simple arithmetic: multiply the bill by the tip percentage to get the tip, then add it to the bill for the total. This calculator does that and, if you are splitting the check, divides the total by the number of people so everyone knows exactly what they owe.
In the United States, 15% is the usual baseline for table service, 18–20% is generous, and 20%+ marks excellent service. The tip is normally figured on the pre-tax bill, though many people simply use the total — either works, and the difference is small.
