How the Recipe Converter Works

To resize a recipe, every ingredient scales by the same factor: the servings you want divided by the servings the recipe makes. Doubling from 4 to 8 is a factor of 2; going from 4 to 6 is a factor of 1.5. Multiply each ingredient amount by that factor and the proportions stay perfect.

Enter your original and desired servings to get the factor, and drop in any single ingredient amount to see it scaled. A few notes: cooking times don’t scale linearly, pan sizes may need to change, and strong seasonings like salt and spices are best scaled by taste rather than exactly.

scale factor = desired servings ÷ original servings

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I scale a recipe up or down?

Divide the servings you want by the servings the recipe makes, then multiply every ingredient by that factor. For 6 from a recipe of 4, multiply everything by 1.5.

Do cooking times change when I scale a recipe?

Not proportionally. A bigger batch may need a little longer, but oven temperature stays the same. Check for doneness rather than just multiplying the time.

Should I scale spices exactly?

Scale them as a starting point, but strong seasonings and salt are best adjusted by taste, since they don’t always scale linearly.
