Significant figures are the digits in a number that carry real precision. The rules: all non-zero digits count; zeros between them count; leading zeros never count; and trailing zeros count only when there’s a decimal point. So 0.00340 has three significant figures (3, 4 and the final 0), while 1200 has just two unless written as 1200.
