How the High School GPA Calculator Works

Your GPA is the average of your grades weighted by course credits: multiply each course’s grade points (A = 4, B = 3, and so on) by its credit hours, add them up, and divide by the total credits. This calculator does that for an unweighted GPA and also a weighted one, which adds a bonus for harder classes — commonly +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP or IB.

Weighted GPAs can exceed 4.0, which is why a student loaded with AP classes can post a 4.3 or higher. Colleges look at both, so it’s useful to know each. Enter up to five courses; leave credits blank to skip a row.

GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits

Frequently Asked Questions

How is high school GPA calculated?

Multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, sum them, and divide by total credits. A, B, C, D, F are worth 4, 3, 2, 1, 0.

What is a weighted GPA?

One that adds points for harder classes — usually +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP or IB — so it can go above 4.0.

Do colleges use weighted or unweighted GPA?

Both. Many recalculate to their own scale, so it helps to know your weighted and unweighted numbers.
