FFMI — fat-free mass index — is like BMI but it ignores fat, so it measures how much lean muscle you carry for your height. First find your fat-free mass: weight times one minus your body-fat fraction. Then divide that (in kilograms) by your height in metres squared. A 180-lb person at 15% body fat and 5′10″ has an FFMI around 22.
The normalized FFMI adjusts to a standard 1.8 m (about 5′11″) height so taller and shorter people compare fairly. As a rough guide, an FFMI near 25 is often cited as the natural ceiling for a lean, drug-free trained man; 16–20 is average and above 22 is muscular. Women run several points lower.
FFMI = fat-free mass (kg) ÷ height (m)²
Multiply weight by (1 − body-fat fraction) to get fat-free mass, then divide that in kilograms by your height in metres squared.
Roughly: 16–20 is average, 20–22 is fit, and 22–25 is muscular. An FFMI around 25 is often cited as the natural limit for a lean, trained man; women are typically several points lower.
It adjusts your FFMI to a standard 1.8 m height so people of different heights can be compared on the same scale.
