Planning a speech, presentation or video script? Divide your word count by your speaking pace to get the run time. Most people speak at about 130 words per minute in a presentation — slower for formal talks, faster in casual delivery — so a 1,000-word speech runs roughly 7½ minutes.
This calculator shows the time at slow, average and fast paces so you can hit a target length, plus the silent-reading time in case the text is meant to be read rather than spoken. Remember to add time for pauses, slides and audience reactions.
speaking time = words ÷ speaking pace (words per minute)
At an average speaking pace of 130 words per minute, about 7 minutes 40 seconds. Formal talks run slower, closer to 8–10 minutes.
At 130 words per minute, roughly 650 words. Aim a little under to leave room for pauses and emphasis.
About 130 words per minute is a comfortable default. Use 100 for formal or technical talks and 160 for lively, casual delivery.
