Power and torque are linked through engine speed: torque equals horsepower times 5,252, divided by RPM. So 300 hp at 5,000 RPM is about 315 lb-ft. The constant 5,252 comes from the definition of horsepower, and it’s the RPM at which any engine’s horsepower and torque curves always cross.
Torque is the twisting force; horsepower is how quickly that force does work. This is the inverse of finding horsepower from torque and RPM.
torque (lb-ft) = horsepower × 5252 ÷ RPM
Multiply the horsepower by 5,252 and divide by the RPM. 300 hp at 5,000 RPM is about 315 lb-ft.
