A certificate of deposit pays a fixed interest rate for a fixed term. Banks quote the APY — annual percentage yield — which already accounts for compounding, so your balance simply grows by the APY each year for the length of the term.
Longer terms and larger deposits usually earn more, but your money is locked in: withdrawing early typically forfeits some interest. This estimate assumes you hold the CD to maturity, and shows pre-tax figures.

APY, or annual percentage yield, is the real rate of return after compounding is applied. Because it already includes compounding, you can multiply it across the years directly.
