How the Time Duration Calculator Works

This calculator finds how much time passes between a start and an end time. It converts both times to minutes since midnight, subtracts, and expresses the result as hours and minutes, decimal hours (handy for timesheets and billing) and total minutes.

If the end time is earlier than the start, the calculator assumes the span crosses midnight and adds 24 hours — so an overnight shift from 22:00 to 06:00 correctly reads eight hours.

minutes = end − start  (+ 24 h if it crosses midnight)

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate hours between two times?

Convert each time to minutes past midnight, subtract, and divide by 60. This calculator shows the result as hours and minutes and as decimal hours.

What are decimal hours?

Time expressed as a single number, where minutes are a fraction of an hour — 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.5 decimal hours. Payroll and billing systems usually want this form.

Does it handle overnight shifts?

Yes. If the end time is before the start time, it adds 24 hours, so a shift that crosses midnight is measured correctly.
