This calculator adds, subtracts, multiplies or divides two fractions and reduces the answer to lowest terms. Adding or subtracting first puts both fractions over a common denominator; multiplying goes straight across the tops and bottoms; dividing flips the second fraction and multiplies.
Whatever the operation, the result is then simplified by dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD), and shown as a decimal and, where it applies, a mixed number. Enter whole numbers in each box — the denominators cannot be zero.
a/b ± c/d = (a·d ± c·b) / (b·d)
Put them over a common denominator — the product of the two denominators always works — then add the numerators. This calculator does that and then reduces the result to lowest terms.
Keep the first fraction, flip the second (its reciprocal) and multiply. Dividing by 1/6, for example, is the same as multiplying by 6.
It means dividing the top and bottom by their greatest common divisor so the fraction is in its smallest whole-number form — for example 6/8 simplifies to 3/4.
