How the Simplifying Fractions Calculator Works

To simplify a fraction, divide the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor — the largest number that goes into both evenly. For 8⁄12 the GCD is 4, so both divide down to give 2⁄3, the same value in lowest terms.

A fraction is fully reduced when the top and bottom share no common factor other than 1. The calculator also shows the mixed-number and decimal forms.

simplified = numerator ÷ GCD over denominator ÷ GCD

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you simplify a fraction?

Find the greatest common divisor of the numerator and denominator and divide both by it. 8⁄12 ÷ 4 = 2⁄3.

What does “lowest terms” mean?

A fraction whose numerator and denominator share no common factor except 1 — it can’t be reduced further.

Is 2/3 in simplest form?

Yes — 2 and 3 have no common factor other than 1.
