Sales tax is a percentage added to the price of goods and services at checkout. To find it, multiply the pre-tax price by the tax rate; add that to the price for the total you actually pay. This calculator shows both the tax and the grand total.
Rates vary widely by location because they combine state, county and city taxes, so a rate of anywhere from 0% to over 10% is possible in the US. Enter your local combined rate to get an exact figure. To work backwards from a tax-included total, use our reverse sales tax calculator.
tax = price × rate total = price + tax
Multiply the item price by the sales tax rate expressed as a decimal — for example 7.5% is 0.075. A $100 item at 7.5% has $7.50 in tax, for a $107.50 total.
Sales tax usually stacks a state rate with county and city rates, so the combined rate depends on exactly where the sale happens. Some states have no sales tax at all.
Divide the total by one plus the tax rate. Our reverse sales tax calculator does this for you and shows the tax that was included.
