A weighted average gives some values more influence than others. Multiply each value by its weight, add those products, and divide by the total weight. If a test worth 3 credits scores 90 and one worth 2 credits scores 80, the weighted average is (90×3 + 80×2) ÷ 5 = 86 — closer to the 90 because it carried more weight.
A plain average is just a weighted average where every weight is equal. Weighted averages appear everywhere: grades, portfolios, survey results and price indexes.

A normal average weights everything equally; a weighted average lets some values count more.
