Digital storage is measured in bytes and its multiples: 1 kilobyte is 1,024 bytes, 1 megabyte is 1,024 KB, 1 gigabyte is 1,024 MB, and so on — each step is 1,024 (2 to the tenth) because computers count in binary. This converter turns your value into bytes, then into the unit you want, and shows the common sizes side by side.
A note on marketing: drive makers often use decimal units (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes), which is why a “1 TB” drive shows as about 931 GB in your operating system, which uses the binary units this converter uses.
1 KB = 1024 B, 1 MB = 1024 KB, 1 GB = 1024 MB
In binary units, 1,073,741,824 bytes (1024³). Drive makers often use the decimal 1,000,000,000.
Manufacturers advertise in decimal GB, but your OS counts in binary. A 1 TB drive shows about 931 GB.
Bytes, kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB), gigabytes (GB), terabytes (TB) — each 1,024 times the last.
