To turn a percentage into a decimal, divide by 100: 75% becomes 0.75. It’s the reverse of decimal-to-percent, and the shortcut is to move the decimal point two places to the left. This is the form you need to actually multiply by a percentage in a calculation.
So to take 8% sales tax off a price, convert 8% to 0.08 first, then multiply.
decimal = percent ÷ 100
Divide by 100, or move the decimal point two places left. 75% = 0.75.
0.75.
Because to multiply by a percentage in a formula you need its decimal form — 8% becomes 0.08.
