How the Scientific Notation Calculator Works

Scientific notation writes any number as a coefficient between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of ten. It makes very large and very small numbers manageable — 0.00042 becomes 4.2 × 10−4, and 93,000,000 becomes 9.3 × 107. The exponent simply counts how many places the decimal point moves.

Enter a number in ordinary decimal form or in e-notation (like 4.2e-4). The calculator finds the exponent as the floor of the base-10 logarithm of the number, divides by that power of ten to get the coefficient, and shows the result in proper scientific form, e-notation and plain decimal.
