Torque is the twisting force around a pivot: the force applied times the length of the lever arm it acts on. Push with 100 newtons on a 0.5-meter wrench and you produce 50 newton-meters of torque. A longer lever or more force gives more torque, which is why a breaker bar loosens stubborn bolts.
This assumes the force is applied at a right angle to the lever, which gives the maximum torque. If the force is at an angle, only the perpendicular component counts. Newton-meters are the SI unit; foot-pounds are common in the US.
torque = force × lever arm
Multiply the force by the length of the lever arm it acts through, when the force is perpendicular to the arm.
More lever arm means more torque for the same force, so a longer wrench or breaker bar loosens tight bolts more easily.
