A saltwater pool needs its salt kept in a range — usually around 3,000–3,400 ppm. To raise the level, multiply your pool’s volume in gallons by the ppm increase you want, times 8.34 (the pounds in a gallon of water), divided by one million. A 15,000-gallon pool going from 1,500 to 3,200 ppm needs about 213 pounds of salt — roughly six 40-pound bags.
Add salt gradually with the pump running, and retest after it fully dissolves (a day or so) before adding more. If your level is already at or above target, you don’t add salt — you dilute with fresh water instead.

Most salt chlorine generators want about 3,000–3,400 ppm. Check your generator’s manual for its exact target.
You can’t remove salt chemically — drain part of the pool and refill with fresh water to dilute it back into range.
