Your FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) number is the nest egg that lets you live off investment withdrawals. The classic “4% rule” says you can safely withdraw about 4% of a portfolio each year, so your target is 25 times your annual expenses. Spend $40,000 a year and you’d aim for $1,000,000.
A more cautious 3% rate raises the target to about 33 times expenses; a bolder rate lowers it. It’s a rule of thumb from historical market data, not a guarantee.
FIRE number = annual expenses ÷ withdrawal rate
The amount invested that lets you retire on withdrawals — classically 25 times your annual expenses (the 4% rule).
A guideline that withdrawing about 4% of your portfolio a year is likely to last a long retirement, based on historical returns.
At $40,000 of expenses, about $1,000,000 at a 4% rate, or $1,333,000 at a safer 3%.
