Wall studs are spaced evenly, usually 16 inches on center. The number of studs is the wall length in inches divided by the spacing, plus one for the end — then a couple extra for corners and blocking. A 20-foot wall at 16-inch spacing needs about 18 studs, plus three times the length in plate lumber for the top and bottom plates.
Add more studs at doors, windows and wall intersections for framing openings. This gives the baseline count for a straight wall.
